Types of Rice-Purple Thai Rice, Chinese Black Rice


 

Purple Thai Rice:

Purple Thai rice is a bit sweeter in taste than all the other rices. Previously, it was used for making desserts but now chefs all over the world have started using it in some of the main course meals too.

While preparing dishes, with this rice, make sure to add all the other ingredients at the last minute to prevent them from getting converted into a reddish-blue hue.

Purple Thai rice has a beautiful and shiny texture which turns indigo in color when cooked. The rice can be very well paired with fresh fruits, salads, risottos, desserts, and a whole lot of other ingredients.

To maintain the lifespan of the grain, always ensure to store it in a cool and dry place.

Chinese Black Rice:

Only the bran of the rice is black with a white color grain in the inside. It is medium in size and turns slightly purplish in color when cooked. Chinese Black Rice is also known by the name ‘Forbidden Black Rice’.

Although it is not that sweet but still sweeter than most other rice types. Similar to Purple Thai Rice, this one can also be used in both sweet as well as savory dishes.

The rice type was once known as Emperor’s Rice because it was only served to Chinese Emperors and was forbidden everywhere else. It is rich in fiber and has a firm texture along with a nutty flavor.

This takes around thirty minutes to get fully cooked and turns the water deep burgundy. It has more amount of vitamins and minerals than any other rice variety.

The plant has distinctive black tops which stand out from traditional rice paddies.
