Swimming is no doubt one of the best exercises when it comes to toning up all your body muscles. Unlike other workouts, it soothes the body as well as the mind. It makes you feel refreshed and lively. Even though it’s a great stress buster, swimming has it’s own pro’s and con’s.
The chlorine used in public swimming pools can cause great damage to your tender skin and smooth hair. Not just that it leaves you tanned but also gives rise to dryness of hair and skin. Here are a few precautions that you can take before and after swimming to prevent these problems.
SKIN
Rinse Before Swimming
This hydrates the skin and prevents it from drying. It also forms a protective layer against harmful chemicals in the pool.
Chlorine Neutralizing Lotion
If your skin is too sensitive to chlorine, you may apply this body lotion before entering the pool. It can be easily found in a local chemist store.
Petroleum Jelly
If you are not able to find the above lotion, petroleum jelly can also be used as a substitute. It will make sure that you do not end up getting rashes or itchy/burning sensation after coming out of the pool.
Rinse After Swimming
The fresh water will wash away any left chlorine particles from your skin and hydrate it. Also, it will eliminate all the mushy smell that you get after leaving a pool.
Moisturize
Once you are done with the post swimming shower, apply a good moisturizer or a body lotion to your face, neck, elbows, feet and hands. This will bring in the lost moisture and help you get rid of the dryness caused due to chlorine.
HAIR
Apply Coconut Oil
Before going in the pool, make sure you oil your hair. This will lock all the moisture and prevent it from getting frizzy and dry. Also applying coconut oil is a must for those who have colored hair. Colored hair often turns green when it comes in contact with chlorine.
Shower Cap
You can wear a shower cap after applying coconut oil for more protection. Some people even wear two shower caps to escape chlorine from touching even a single strand of their hair.
Hair Products
As long as you have those swimming sessions going, avoid using any kind of hair styling products. May it be skin or hair, try to keep it as natural as possible, at least untill the time you continue swimming.
Post Swimming Hair Wash
Post swimming, make sure to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo to flush out chlorine residues from your locks. Always condition your hair after each and every hair wash.
Hair Pack
Whip two eggs in two teaspoons of honey. Mix thoroughly and apply it directly on your scalp. Cover your head with a towel for about 10 minutes and then rinse as usual with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
